Raising a child can be tough even in the best of situations. Mothers who are also facing a financial crisis may find that their problems raising a child have multiplied. Many need help with the costs of transportation, housing or other basic necessities. Grants from governments and foundations can help mothers and their children make it through difficult times to lead more rewarding and more independent lives.
The Avon Foundation
The Avon Foundation, a charity sponsored by the cosmetics manufacturer, provides grants to help improve the lives of women and their children. As of September 2010, the foundation had provided more than $725 million to women who have been victims of domestic violence, suffered a major illness such as breast cancer or can't afford adequate medical care for themselves and their children. Avon Foundation grants are distributed through various organizations. Women can find out if they qualify for Avon grants by contacting the foundation.
Housing is often one of the biggest expenses that mothers with children face. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issues housing grants to qualified applicants based on need. HUD grant recipients include women in low-income categories and single mothers who have trouble making ends meet. The grants can be used toward rent, the purchase of a home or improvements that make a home safer or more energy efficient.. Applicants must meet income guidelines and must apply through their local HUD office. The department has offices in every state.

Opportunity Cars
Mothers who need help obtaining safe and affordable transportation in order to work and support their children can apply to Opportunity Cars. The network of 150 nonprofit organizations helps such women through its grant program. Applicants must meet low-income requirements. Mothers who obtain grants can use them to purchase a new or reliable used vehicle, or to pay for repairs to a car they already own. The Opportunity Cars program has offices in 33 states.
