Climate change is bringing about new challenges for the global environment. This has made many companies to develop ways of decreasing energy consumption by using renewable energy sources. One of the challenges you may face in an effort to go green is the cost involved. Going green requires a lot of money which you might not have. This is why the federal government offers support in the form of grants that act as incentives to develop new methods of green energy.
Small Business Innovation Grants
The federal government offer grants to small businesses involved in scientific research and development (R Defense, Energy, Transportation, Health and Human Services and Agriculture.
Green Communities Grants
If you are a developer, you may qualify for two types of grants. Charrettes Grants provide up to $5,000 to use green building systems. Sustainability Training Grants of $5,000 support the development and maintenance of environmentally healthy housing. Enterprise Green Communities work with local governments to provide funds that enable you to build and rehabilitate affordable homes that are less harmful to the environment. The supporters of the grants include the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Surdna Foundation, Citi Foundation, and Bank of America Foundation Inc. among others.
EERE Funding
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) can provide financial assistance for your company if it deals with renewable energy and energy efficiency R&D. The EERE works with other agencies such as U.S. Department of Energy to coordinate this funding. The grants are awarded through a competitive process and are given on merit. For example, EERE gave a total of $2.2 billion in fiscal year 2009 for financial assistance.
Green Jobs Innovation Grants
If you are considering training your workers in necessary green skills, the Department of Labor may give you a green job innovation grant. You must have a project management structure and a data system to track the outcome of the training accurately for you to qualify for the grant. The department awards grants on merit after your organization has presented a written proposal and a budget showing how it will train the workers.
